Biology question - 10 points for help?

Ok consider this problem-
A mutation arose that resulted in sheep with gold fleece but true breeding golden fleece sheep were impossible to obtain.

What is the explaination for this? I think it could be that a gene masks the expression, or a double golden fleece gene is fatal.
Am i right or completely wrong?
