How are diffusion and osmosis similar?
Both involve the net movement of a substance from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. (see 1st link below)

What is meant by semi-permeable and how does the cell benefit?
A semi-permeable membrane is a membrane which will allow the passage of certain molecules through it by the process of diffusion. The rate of passage depends on the pressure, concentration and temperature of the solvent on either side, as well as the permeability of the membrane to each type of molecule or solute. Depending on the membrane and the solute, permeability may depend on solute size, solubility properties, or chemistry. An example of a semi-permeable membrane is a lipid bilayer, on which is based the plasma membrane that surrounds all biological cells. Many natural and synthetic materials thicker than a membrane are also semi-permeable. (see 3rd link below) The degree of permeability benefits the cell by assisting in maintaining structure & function.

How diffusion affect the cell?
In cell biology, diffusion is a main form of transport of necessary materials such as amino acids through cell membranes to maintain cell viability & structure.

Check out the sources below so you KNOW the material :-)
GOOD LUCK!

I'll help if you promise to use proper grammar and terminology please. (Makes researching an answer for you easier)

One process goes through a membrane (skin or film ) and the does not.

diffusion - traveling from a high concentration to a lower concentration
think spreading
perfume traveling throughout the air in a room

osmosis - diffusion through a semi-permeable membrane
think absorption
water being soaked up by a sponge - the WHOLE sponge gets wet, not just one part
