Tips for a young author?

I have been wanting to write a book for a long time now. Yes, i know that it is hard and it takes discipline. Do youhave any tips on actually writing the book? Publishing is not a priority for me, I think I would like to see how the book comes out first and play around with it. I don't think i would even publish it because it is my first book. I just need tips on the writing part, like how to work out a good storyline or how to develop characters. If you have tips i would definetly appreciate it and links to web sites are greatly appreciated as well.
