elie101_forever has a spectacular aura about
How does the whole getting paid thing work for a author?

I've been trying to figure out how it works for a author getting paid but can't seem to um.... understand. All this stuff about advances and royalty checks don't seem to register in my teenage brain, lol.
Can anyone explain to me in a really simple way how it works for a author to get paid?
And is writing a good way to make a living? I know some author's like, J.K. Rowling are like, millionaires. So I'm guessing the money you get paid is based on the popularity of the book and how many copies it sells? Or uh... something like that?
I don't want to seem totally ignorant on this but I kinda am ^_^'
