help remembering title of book and Author?

OK. this book is about World War II. it was written more than 40 years ago. It centered around Naples after the Americans took that city. On the cover of the version I read was a picture of two concrete babies sharing a helmet. The concrete babies were pock-marked by bullets and they were naked babies.

At the time, I looked up other books by the same author, but he didn't have any others. The book was made up of stories from several perspectives. One was a young Neopolitian woman. One was an American soldier in a hospital. One was an American soldier in combat.

This has had me stumped for several years.
