I want to read some good books! Any recommendations?

I've just started reading books (novels). I read a book called "The Bell Jar". Not out of personal choice, but because I had to do a book review. I found that i really enjoyed having a book around to dive into whenever i can! The thing is I don't know what book to buy! I feel as though i've missed out on a whole host of great books. The only books i'd read prior to "The Bell Jar" was the Harry Potter series!

Where should I begin? What books should everyone have read before they die?

Any suggestions (even whole lists i can work through) would be much appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

dissolution is a good 15th century detective novel or try the louis knight crime mysteries, the first one is called Aberyswyth, Mon Amour, they're very funny.
