Are there any notable authors that used to write fan-fiction?

I'm just curious. I see that so many aspiring writers write fan-fiction. Personally, I think that fan-fiction is pretty silly and unoriginal. I'm just very curious to know if there are any notable authors that started out writing fan-fiction - and I don't mean one or two small pieces - I'm talking about somebody that was really into it. Do you know of anybody?
Ha, ha! Did you notice that the question that posted /just/ before mine is about Twilight fan-fiction?
