How to make a "book" out of heavy paper and strings?

i want to make a "book" out of black heavy paper (construction paper but thicker) and some strings.. i have tried to hole punch the edges of the paper and tie a long string on it but it doesn't quite work... you can't turn the paper like turning a page. help?!
