praxis II math question?

in the kaplan study guide the following question is posted: 64 members of a botany in college. if there are 3 times as many girls than boys, how many girls are in the club. the answer is 48. Can some help me understand this please?

number of boys=xnumber of girls= 3xx +3x =644x=64x=163x =48, the number of girls

ok, now there are 64 members total.lets say:boys= xgirls would = 3xbecause there are 3 times as many girls as there are boys.so you would take:x+3x=644x=6464/4=xx=16now you have the number of boys....not the girls and the question asks for the number of girls.so:3x=answer3(16)=?3*16=48That's how you do it
