how do i comfort a catholic friend who's mother was recently diagnosed with stage 4

cancer? i'm atheist btw.
it's really hard since the survival rate is really low.

Be there. Give your friend a hug (if you are the huggy type) or simply your hand.

You don't need to offer platitudes or say anything, except maybe a sincere offer to help if your friend needs something. And then if he does ask you for some help, follow thru and give your friend all that he has asked.

I found, when our family went thru a difficult time, it was very helpful when friends would sit with us, and let us talk. Just listen, without opinions being given back. Didn't change a thing, of course, except that being able to express the grief made it easier to bear.
