skin cancer?

i just found out my friend has skin cancer..
we were changing at school and i saw all these weird marks on her stomach and i accidently blurted out..what is that and she told me she had skin cancer..i just acted cool and was like oh okay..is it deathly..will those marks go away..? whatever other info would be good too=)i dont really want to talk to her about it.thanks=)
what causes it?
