Sunburns in childhood may lead to skin cancer as adult?

As a teenager I decided I didn't like my (very) pale skin and I used to sit out in the garden tanning. I used suncream, but I seemed unable to stop my shoulders and back from burning once a year or so, and on one occasion my face was badly burnt with a few blisters on top of my forehead. Also my scalp has been burnt.

Now I am older and a bit wiser it's not going to ever happen again. But is it true that these burns can cause skin cancer whether or not I take care from now on?

Also, how would you check your scalp? I have attempted to look in two mirrors to try and see it but it's difficult, how do people do it?
