Smoking is linked to only a few cancers; nobody knows what causes most cancers. The difficulty with finding a cure is that different cancers are caused by different things, so no one strategy can prevent them They all respond to different treatments so no one treatment can cure them, so there isn't a magic bullet that cures all cancers and there never will be. But quite a few cancers can be cured these days: seven out of ten children are cured of cancer; testicular cancer, Hodgkin's disease, and many cases of leukaemia can all be cured in adults with chemotherapy, most skin cancers are cured with surgery and many cases of thyroid cancer and cancer of the larynx (voice box) are cured with radiotherapy. Many other types of cancer are also cured if they are found early enough - three quarters (75%) of breast cancers found at stage one for example. Yes, there is still a long way to go, especially with some of the more common types of cancer such as lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancer. I see at least one conspiracy theorist has replied to this question; suggestions of a conspiracy, a ‘secret cure’ kept hidden to keep profits high are nonsense’; it’s a sort of game played by people who haven’t had cancer. Think seriously about the conspiracy theory. In order to prove that any secret, hidden cure worked, several hundred people would have to have been cured by it (otherwise how would its discoverers know it worked?). Every single one of these people would be keeping quiet about it– not a word to the media from any of them, or any of their delighted relatives and friends. And drug companies would be keeping quiet about the cure too, even though it would bring them fame and fortune. Any drug company discovering a cure would make far more money than they can have dreamed of making up till now. Doctors, scientists, researchers etc would be watching their relatives die and dying themselves (they and their families develop cancer at the same rate as the rest of the population) rather than revealing the existing secret cure Most unlikely of all, every medical professional in the whole world would have agreed to keep existence of a cure secret. Every single one. One blabbermouth, one disgruntled researcher or sacked nurse and the whole conspiracy’s blown. Newspapers and other media wouldn't have got a sniff of it. Likely? -and is it likely that these people, who went into medicine to help people, would be conspiring to kill them? If they wanted to make a fortune, medicine was a very poor choice of career. I live in the UK, and I had surgery, chemo and radiotherapy. I paid not one penny for any of it, because we have a national health service - the state paid for it. And as you see, we have exactly the same treatments as people in America, whence these conspiracy theories usually come. Cancer costs our government billions; BELIEVE ME, if there were an effective cure, they'd pick that over expensive chemo; as it is I may be back some time with a recurrence to cost them even more money. (Oh, and my oncologist, my surgeon, my family doctor all drew exactly the same salary during my treatment as they would have had I never had cancer, so they wouldn’t benefit from any conspiracy to hide a cure.) Current cancer treatments aren't perfect – far from it. But we know, because they’ve been rigorously tested and proven in double-blind clinical trials, that they save many lives and prolong many many more, and there is dedicated (and underfunded) hard work going on to find the cures to all cancers. And yes, cigarettes are still sold because profit is more important than people in our society.

Apparently you're speaking only of Lung Cancer, throat cancer, voice box cancer The tobacco industry has a LOT of MONEY invested in politics! I have a grandmother who was _just_ diagnosed with FOUR different types of Cancer! She doesn't smoke! unfortunately we ALL _-KNOW-_ smoking cigarettes AND Marijuana causes cancer! BUT! NOBODY has devised an EFFECTIVE way to help smokers QUIT! It seems to _ME_ that the medical 'trade' is MORE into 'treating' sicknesses than PREVENTING them! Because if NOBODY got sick they'd be out of work. Or almost. HUH! Just MY point of view!! We NEED to FIX/CHANGE how things work or don't work in these United States!! "ALL You NEED Is LOVE!" THE B E A T L E S! Vincent Reagan "H A W K E Y E!"

Almost anything you do or consume can be harmful in large amounts. In the case of cigarettes, the idea is that it is a personal choice. However, government regulations are increasingly making it less practical to be a smoker. The result is fewer and fewer people are smoking. But even as a non-smoker, I have to ask wonder at what point the government regulations go too far. I'm all for anything that promotes my right to breath clean air in public/closed spaces. But does the government have the right to regulate personal spaces - even if it's in the interest of protecting children? The question I find interesting with regard to cigarettes is how something with no apparent positives became so popular. I think the answer is simply peer pressure or feeling part of "the crowd".
