His father died of cancer?

I liked this guy named Dan. He was popular, I was shy. He always gave me attention, more then any other girl in the classroom. He made me excited to come to English. He kind of has this reputation for being a jerk though, and he sat next to me with my table at english. We had the choice to sit anywhere.

Well, when he got up and left, the two guys seemed kind of rude to him. I asked them if they had a grudge against him, and they said he was a jerk because his father died of cancer when he was six. They said it loudly, and they said he never had a father figure and that's why he's so messed up.A few minutes later Dan asked if he could leave the class early. He kept trying to leave.

Even if I didn't do anything, should I apologize? I feel bad even if I didn't do it. Was he trying to leave because he over heard?
