is taking an role as an 'extra' a bad career move?

i want to make acting my primary source of income eventually by doing major film roles or television but with no prior professional experience i have to start somewhere right? I would gain much needed experience and be able to network but i've heard it's not worth it. tomorrow i am supposed to call to confirm being an extra in FD IV but i wonder if i should.
