| Organic Chemistry - Borohydride reduction of Vanillin to Vanillyl Alcohol? This question regards the solubility of vanillin. I came across a procedure (professionally made with detailed explanations of reactions - probably not wrong) for the reduction of the aldehyde group of vanillin to an alcohol. The first step is to dissolve .4 grams of vanillin in 2.5 mL of a 1 M NaOH solution. I looked up the solubility of vanillin in water and it's listed as 1 gram per 100 grams of solvent at 25 C. (The procedure directions are carried out at room temperature.) My question is this... If 1 gram of vanillin is soluble in 100 mL of water, how could you possibly dissolve 0.4 grams in 2.5 mL of an aqueous solution? |
