the period tables is separated in to different group. The ones you are asking about are metals and nonmetals LI Na K Rb Cs Fr are all metals if you look at the table you will see that they are all in the same row going up and down. This means all these metals have the same charge. Like wise Cl which is a nonmetal that has a charge that is oppsite to the metal metals for a metal and nonmetal to combine the postive change must match the negitive charge to form what is called a ionic bond. hope this helps |

the list of metals that you give are all found in column 1 of the periodic table. Elements in column 1 have 1 electron in the outer ring and give that one electron away forming compounds. They all become +1 ions. Chlorine is in column 17 and requires 1 electron to fill its outer ring. So it can combine with 1 element from column 1 that wants to give it 1 electron. |
