Does anybody know about the leaving cert chemistry course? Esp. experiments?

Here's the thing: I want to do chemistry for leaving cert but I can't because I want to do history too and they're both on at the same time. I was thinking maybe I could do it outside school because my mother was a chemistry teacher years ago and she could help me if I got stuck . . .
The only problem is experiments, I know the mandatory experiments come up on the exam, but do I absolutely have to do them? Could I just learn them for the exam? Does a teacher have to sign off for me to say that I did them? Is there a lab-book to be filled out? Please please please help if you know...
