Resonance hybrid used in organic chemistry, can someone explain this in easy terms?

Resonance hybrid used in organic chemistry, can someone explain this in easy terms?

What does it mean when it is said resonance forms are not real, although each makes a cotribution to reality. The molecule vibrates between them.....hmmm.

Also, one common way of obtaining resonance is the lone pair must be placed in a p-orbital. Why not s orbital?
