| Chemistry - gases?
a large, high altitude weather ballon with maximum volume of 15 cubic meters is partially flled with .5000 kg of hydrogen gas at a hanger at STP. The balloon is then released and floats to an altitude of 15000 ft where the pressure is 37.1 kPa and the temp is 18 degrees C. What is the volume of hydrogen in the balloon at 15000 ft? I came up with about 40 k but I don't think this is right |

500 g H2 = 248 moles 248 moles occupies 5555.5 liters at STP 15 cubic meter = 15x100^3 cm^3 = 15000 liters P = 0.366 atm T = 291 deg K n = 248 moles V = 248 moles x 0.08206 x 291 deg K / 0.366 atm V = 16181 L (16.181 m^3) which is greater than the maximum capacity of the ballon. |
