Normally you will be assigned.

A guy I used to work with was all pumped up about joining the Coast Guard. He left the Army to become a rescue helicopter pilot...or so he thought. He had the test scores, excellent vision, good coordination, everything you'd want in a pilot.

He spent three years on the Great Lakes, the first year doing maintenance on channel markers. No flight school, no ocean duty, just scraping and painting....and cruising around in the middle of North America. He came back to the Army to become a firefighter.
