How is it to have a pet in the military? Mainly the Coast Guard.? Hello everyone. I am currently Active Duty in the US Coast Guard, where they are paying for me to get my degree here at FSU. I was hoping to get a pet as I have never had one (my mother hates animals). But I do not want to get a dog or cat without knowing it can be taken care of if I were to go away. Does anyone here have a pet while you are in the military? And how do you take care of it? I am single, and will most likely be living by myself when I go off into the fleet. I just didn't know what options I may have when I get out of OCS in regards to having a dog or cat. Thanks to any help I can get! I made the mother comment because she never let us have pets when I was growing up as a kid. I frankly don't care what she thinks about pets now as I am an adult. I don't see how you could have taken what I said like that...unless you were reading fast... Also, Coast Guard is such a small service and scattered throughout that the majority don't even live in berthing as there isn't any. We are all given BAH at almost any unit.

Well...wherever you are living will have what is allowed and what is not. I know people who are enlisted in Active Army and live in barracks and no pets are allowed. But as for Officers in the Coast Guard, I am not sure. You will just have to wait till you graduate to find out where you are going and what you can obtain. Wish I could help you more, but I am enlisted in the ARNG.... Good luck

If you are so attached to your mother that she dictates to you whether you have a pet or not then the military should not accept you for any officer assignment! You're far too young and unprepared for what's to face you ahead!
