If you have been off depression medicene for a year can you join the coast guard?

I tried to join the reserves about a year ago, and told the recruiter about taking depression meds. he said you have to be off of them for a year to consider enlisting. Is this true or is it just a way to "kindly sweep you under the rug"? I am completly off the meds and my doctor even said he would write a note saying that I am fully capable to do any job...thanks for the answers in advance..

Yes. You have to be off medication for depression for at least one year to join any branch. But, if you were admitted to a facility for treatment of that depression, or were involved in therapy on an out-patient basis for a period of six months or more, then it is disqualifying.
The source below is the medical standard for this condition.

you must be off for 12 months and function normally during that time before a waiver will be considered.

waivers are NOT guaranteed, Your doctor will have little influence in getting that waiver granted.

Be aware that the CG grants very very very few waivers

If the recrutier told you so, then it must be true! As long as they don't show up on your drug test you should be fine.
