| Coast Guard?
I am thinking of joining the coast guard and have a few questions: 1. What will a high score on the ASVAB do for me? 2. How do the signing bonuses work? 3. How do the housing and schooling allowances work? 4.What is base pay for enlisted? 5. How hard is it to become a rescue swimmer? |

You really need to talk to a recruiter. There are no signing bonuses in the Coast Guard as the Coast Guard is not hurting for people. There is actually about a year waiting list to go to boot camp. As for base pay, you can look that up on the internet under military pay. All full-time Enlisted Coasties entering the Coast Guard make a little over $15,000 for their first year of service. As for everything else you need to go talk to a recruiter. http://www.gocoastguard.com/get-the-answers/find-a-recruiter |

All branches of the military get the same base pay. You can find a chart (pdf) here: www.dfas.mil/militarypay/militarypaytables/2008MilitaryPayChart.pdf My brother got a 90 on the ASVAB and went onto boot as an E2, and got promoted to E3 upon graduation. However, there are only 4000 spots this year, so except to be told you need a competitive score (80 and above, probably) Housing allowances-if you live off base, they take the zip code of whatever base you are serving at and calculate how much you will need to live in that zip code, and you will receive that on top of base pay. Otherwise, if you live on base, you just get base pay. I'm not sure about your other questions, they are probably questions only the recruiter can answer. Just remember, there are very few spots for CG this year, so do your best to be the most competitive candidate you can be! Good luck! |
