Firefighter, especially if you have or are going to have kids.

being a fire fighter is a very noble profession and I have friends among them, but I think the coast guard offers top advantages in education, service, non politics, and a variety of challenges for both men and women. You can serve your country well in either.

He can do both. In the military, being a firefighter just happens to be one of the jobs that allows for a lot of time to get your school on. The Coast Guard has a very well respected fire program as well for future employment concerns.

Both dangerous, but becoming a firefighter would keep him closer to family, which is so important.

Good Luck

SGT V has a spectacular aura about
Depends on whether or not he might want to go to Iraq. I had a friend who joined the Coast Guard during the height of the Vietnam War. His thinking was simple. He would stay stateside. WRONG... they dropped his boat into the Mekong River and he did his 13 month tour there. They never told him which "coast" he was going to guard. The Coast Guard is indeed a good choice. Many people do not know that the Coast Guard is not a part of the Defense Department. They are transitioning to become part of the Dept. of Homeland Security from their former home in the Dept. of Transportation. As the one person pointed out he could become a firefighter in the USCG. Personally, with just a bit of bias the U.S. Air Force is the way to go if you are joining the military with an eye towards getting an education while on active duty. One of my buddies was a Medical Tech and went to college while on USAF active duty and got his B.S. in Nursing. Good luck to him, you, and all those you care about.

Probably should go into the coast guard first, the guard offers many avenues of higher education and training that will better prepare for a firefighting, or endless other positions. Both are very noble professions, and I applaud his choices.
