In the Coast Guard, is it better to have a guaranteed A school or to strike for a

job after basic? I am joining the Coast Guard and I leave for basic March 25. My recruiter and I have not talked about jobs because he said that I will go to a station after basic and will learn about the different jobs and will then be able to chose a school. He said that this way I won't get stuck in a job that I don't like, but just thought that it sounded good. I am just a little apprehensive about signing a blank contract and not really being able to go to school for the job that I want. Also, how does rank fit into this? Can you move up if you are not in a specialized job, or are you just at a stand still? Please help!
