What is the living situation in the Coast Guard?

My husband is thinking about joining the active duty Coast Guard. We have been looking on the internet, but I cannot really figure out how the living situation works and what his schedule would be like. Would it be more like a day-time job where he would come home at night? Or would it be like he was gone for weeks or months and then come home when the task was over? Or both depending on the mission? Would I move to wherever he is stationed? How often will he be moved around?
