I don't understand missions?

So Christians usually ask for money so they can go on missions all over the world. I don't understand why they would ask for donations to go. Then spend $1,000 on a plane ticket to africa. Then spend 2 weeks there building houses or whatever they do and then coming home to talk about it and convince others to go.Can't they do service in their own communities?

One of the faults of the Christian religion is that is does not accept others of different religions as equal. They see it as their holy duty to try and convert others.Another fault is that it is a religion that needs constant funding, which seems to me like a huge oxymoron.

missions serves several purposes1) Christ told us to GO tell the world.2) introducing young people and old to places outside their comfort zone helps them to really see that there is a whole world of lost people, they are away from the comforts of their own lives. (air conditioning, hot meals, warm bed, showers....)God can't use us unless we let go and let Him lead...3) Not everyone is called to go to another country to share the gospel of Christ, many are called to serve right here in their home towns and cities....We must listen to God's calling, and be obedient.

It's all about window dressing. Religious people like to present an image of philanthropy when what they're really chasing after is purely selfish goals. Mormons are no better, by the way. Those guys are really after more dominance and more profit for their organization.

Yes; however, who's going to help those people in Namibia or Burkina Faso if Christians don't?

Helping out your next-door neighbor isn't nearly as exotic, exciting, or cool as going to another continent and building a house."OOoh, look at me- I gave up 2 weeks and went to Africa to build a school.."Gimme a break- I gave up a year and a half... although it didn't feel like much of a sacrifice. I enjoyed every minute! The least they could do is fly on their own dime.

in the LDS Church missionaries serve at theirs or their Families own expense Ward members can help if they want but the young me 19 or older serve for 2 years. they give service when they can but they put in long days finding and teaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Young women can go if they want but they have to be 21. they serve on proselyting missions in visitors centers etc. they go for 18 months. and older retired couples also can go on many types of missions. most missionaries grow more and learn more about life and being good people on missions than at school but most come home and get married go to college most of the time both. most feel that missions were a great experience. but hard work. www.lds.org
