fun ways to get them involved in community service? ages like 7-13? getting parents involved as well?

Getting parents involved is great - kids will never do it if their parents don't.I'd say start local - kids have a very hard time understanding global issues. If you organize a creek clean-up or something, it is direct with observable results they can feel good about. With that foundation, that can open the door to larger issues that are harder to define and harder to see.

Tell them about the needy and maybe read them the Bible story about The Good Samaritan. Discuss why it's important to help others and give the kids a list of shelters and charities to choose to volunteer at. Ask each child to choose the place they'd most like to help and tell you (the parents) why helping there is important to them. Have the family take a vote on it. Call the winning place and ask about their volunteer needs. If there's a tie, then be honest and choose the best idea and go there first and save the second place winner's choice for another time. I think this would work best during the holidays, but maybe doing it once a month would be even better.
