| what can i do during the summer to get into a good college?
Figure out what you want to major in, and do something related to that. Pre-med? Volunteer at a hospital. Science? Volunteer at a local national park or similar. Math? Tutor kids. English? Start a novel. Something like that looks great on college applications.

I would suggest getting involved in Relay for Life (american cancer society), local blood drive volunteering, Habitat for humanity, volunteer at a local hospital, you could also maybe start something up on your own. Colleges would look at your leadership and dedication and that will definitely get your vote! Good luck.

Honestly, do what you want during the summer. It doesn't really matter. Granted, colleges won't be impressed if you just play Guitar Hero all summer, but a summer job, classes, and community service all show responsibility and work ethic. If you want to make a few bucks, get a job. If you want to get ahead in school, take a class. If you want to help people, do community service work. But don't make your decision based on what you think college admissions offices want to see, because they won't really care. What you do during the summer won't get you into college--it's just icing on the cake. Your grades, test scores, and (to a lesser extent) extra curriculars and essay get you in. The rest is just resume fluff.

Unfortunately, it is your grades at this point that will get you into college. If you have just graduated, I'd recommend getting in touch with a community college, (And I bet you can just type in 'town, state, community colleges', and you'd be likely to find some on the internet-or even your local librarian might know) Many schools offer online classes. I would call the school and ask if you should make an appointment to speak with the guidance counselor. They'll know exactly how to help. Good Luck-hope this helps!

I took college classes during the summer between my junior and senior year and loved it. Community service is great and all... but there is nothing better than knowing what college is going to be like before you get there. It will be a huge boost to your confidence and while your classmates are out trying to get arrested the weekend before classes started because they were terrified of moving off to college (like mine were) you'll be counting the college credits you've already earned.

Getting into a good college requires more than just something you do over the summer. It takes your entire high school career to prove that your good enough of a student for whatever school you want to get into.It depends on what grade your in. If your in your junior year (like myself) doing both community service and seeing if there is a corse you can take nearby is a smart idea. However, chances of finding a class at this point in time that isn't full would be difficult. If your in senior year, do as much community service as you can if you don't have a substantial amount as it is. (I know for my school we're require to have 40 hours to graduate. Its my understanding thats how it is in most schools)You can also get a job. Its a good thing to have job experience on your resume along with community service. Colleges like to see that you can be self sustaining.Other than that, you should work on school. Take the toughest classes available in your school. Work like crazy to get good grades (if your already not). And get chummy with your teachers. That way they'll write you a rocking recommendation. ;-)But above all, find out what schools you want to go to. Narrow it down to a list of about 5-7 schools. 2 safety schools (Ones you KNOW you can get into) 3-4 good fits (Ones you have a good chance of getting into. and 2 reach schools. (ones that you might get into). Then see what they want in the application.
