Wherever possible cytotoxicity using cultured cells is used. This avoids needless, trivial animal testing. Where it is a question of a critical biomedical device like a heart valve, artificial joint, brain implant devices and such, applicable international standards call for detailed animal trials before human trials can be started. It can be questioned if it is some sort of arrogance to think that humans are superior to the animals used in such studies. The current practice is to go through an animal ethics committee, which evaluates whether everything else has been done and the animal studies are a precondition for approval for controlled human trials. |
