If I apply for a credit card before I turn 18, will it hurt my credit?

My friend is an employee at JCpenney wanted to get a credit application, so I helped her out and applied for a credit card even though I'm seventeen and I knew It wouldn't go through. I thought it wouldn't even count towards my credit score at all, but I just got a letter in the mail that tells why I was rejected. Will it hurt my credit?

yes, it will. Now you've got a rejection on your credit score. before you just had no credit.

Every time you apply for credit, that shows up as well. Lenders will look at that when considering giving you credit. They do not want to give credit to someone that is asking for a lot of credit.

That said, I do not know if they even processed your application and checked your credit. It is likely they looked at the age and just sent you the rejection letter.

Either way, don't apply for credit you do not want.

Matt
