As an E-4, you take a test on your carreer field. That is compared to all others who test. Points are awarded. Time in grade points are awarded. A small number of points for awards are awarded. NCO accademy ratings are scored. If, say 60 are needed, the top sixty scores are promoted. I believe that a junior/senior (in college) ROTC cadet that washes out starts as an E-5. My memory is a bit cloudy on this but I believe that the highest one can start at other then the ROTC thing (which is quite stupid) is E-3. Below is a helpful link.

If you enlist, as an enlisted man, you can have a PhD and it won't get you past E-3. That's the limit for advanced placement based on education. There's more involved in being an NCO than having an education.

Can't do it. You have to have so many years in and then you have to test for E-5. The highest rank you can get from school is E-2.

Anything ovr 45 credit hours, enters you as an E-3. You can't join higher than an E-3 in the AF. Even if you had a Bachelor's degree. E-5 (Staff Sgt.) is EARNED. You must test to prove that you are competent in your job. YOu must hav excellent EPR's and PT scores. You have to PROVE your worth with the AF.

My husband held 70 credits when he joined. He signed for 6 years and came in as an E-3. He made E-5 in 3 years, which is quite quckly for the AF.
