Why do credit card companies increase your credit limit?

I have had this happen to me, I paid off one card at one bank and my other bank find out that I pay a credit card off. So they would take the credit balance from that credit card and apply it to my credit card that I have with them. I ask them to remove the credit balance from my credit card. I seem like they are trying to keep people in debt. What a shame!
