...type Democrat? My grandmother has always been a Democrat since the first term of FDR. She won't change parties. Yet today I think Democrats are very different from the type of Democrat FDR and even JFK were. My grandmother is against abortion, gay rights, etc., yet she continues to vote for Democrats. I can't figure out why.

I think President Reagan said it best. He said, "I didn't leave the Democrat Party, they left me". For one thing there were damn few socialists in either party during WWII.

It is ironic, isn't it?

It's not so much that they fully embrace the party's platforms, as they do not want to be identified with the "pro-business" perceptions of being Republican. [A Republican was blamed for the Great Depression]. A depression survivor may continue to vote Democrat to "punish" Republicans...

I believe the Democratic party changed significantly with the election of Nixon. It wasn't so much that Nixon won, but the Democrats lost, by trying to be "inclusive at any cost" to win any and all "remnant, displaced" voters.
You could call it "The Selling of the Democrat soul"

Look at how Al Gore was pro-life and "sold his soul" for national politics.
The word "Democrat" also has a perception of being "Democratic", yet obviously not synonymous....

Depends on the Democrat. I would never vote anything but Democrat.
Your grandmother realizes that there are many more important issues than trying to tell people who they can love and what to do with their own bodies. People who vote Republican only over these two issues is why our country is so messed up now.
There are two kinds of Republicans.. Rich ones and fundamentalist Christians. Or Christians who only vote on 2 or 3 issues and ignore everything else.

Their not real democrats anymore, I was born and raised a democrat and after growing up and getting an education, I realized I wasn't a democrat at all. Its got to where now, they would rather put their country at risk than to admit anything wrong.Its the brainwashing mindset , they think they are democrats but really are not.It's really sad that most vote democrat and cant even tell you why, they just think the democratic party is for the poor man, which is just the biggest myth of all. God Help us.
