How bad are senior citizen homes anyway?

I'm just wondering if they are as really horrible as I've heard? I've heard they don't bathe the senior citizens, don't even talk to them etc and its like some cold, lonely underworld or something. I have two grandparents over the age of eighty. Theyve lived in our house all theyre lives but my grandpa has alzhiemers and is forgetting to do everything possible, he must be constantly monitered. My grandmother can barely move anymore, she needs help walking around her own room. We love my grandparents very much but my mom cant find a job because of this, and our finances have gone down the drain. And she says sitters are too expensive. I spend many nights helping to take care of them and its exhausting, (changing their diapers, helping them walk or turn around, sit down or finding stuff theyve lost) I keep missing homework. We thought of putting them in a home, but mom (and me as well) doesn't trust them. But I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me how bad or how good they really are?
