Why is there such a huge difference in people from urban cities/America, to suburban/rural/semi-rural?

Yesterday I spent the day in NYC, I actually drove there and around the city, and I noticed a very fast-paced, crazy lifestyle, yet in a sense, competent. People drove fast, but they knew where they were going, and I witnessed a world-wide culture; people from all over the world were there, and I didn't see much hate and craziness. It was actually somewhat liberating, because there were SO many people from all over the world, that you felt like you can be whatever, whoever you want.Then....I drove back to New Jersey, to get to Hunterdon County by PA where I live. I stopped by a few places/malls, and we ate, and what I noticed was shocking. The attitude of people the further you got away from the city was more ingnorant, careless, stupid, people driving just as fast, if not faster, but aimlessly, the culture was conformist, people were small-minded, seemed to gossip about one another, even at malls, the fear level was through the roof ,and people seemed to be fake. Pretending, sizing you up, wearing sunglasses, just generally being fake, and much more mean and aggressive than a major US city! Why is it, that urban areas (which are supposed to have more problems) seem to be alot more enlightened if you will, and the people are alot more tolerant of one another, whereaswhen you go to suburban or rural America, it's all about the car you drive, what you look like, the girls obsess over their wardrobes, their hair, their make up, the guys are all about...money/cars, the house you live in, your zip code, your golf buddies, where you eat, who you associate with.Rural and suburban America seem to suffer from a social sickness, where EVERY LITTLE THING about you is judged to bits and pieces, whereas in urban America no one cares! You're free to do whatever, and look however. It's truly mindboggling to me.Here I always thought that I was lucky to live in a peaceful environment away from the city, ONLY to find out, it was like American Beauty!the movie that is. People sick in the head, and all the problems you can imagine, masked by an outside veneer of cleanliness, and nice houses, cars.Everything looks better and seems better than bigger cities, but when you look underneath, you see SO much BS.Am I the only one that notices this?I'm sure this exists everywhere but literally,it's higher away from cities than within, and that boggles my mind.

Luke,I'm your father Vader!...lolAlways wanted to say that to a Luke.I'm from NYC and once I drove through Jersey and say from Newark down to like DC...They get more Hillbilly and foolish.I think it is like that in NYC cause we will light that azz up so people stay on point. I realize a lot of people are followers and suckers when from other places...And Cali is a freak show I mean freak show I went last year for like the first time. They are just some nuts!!!

yeah i totally understand what you're saying. i live in suburbs of chicago, so like everyone is all about fashion and just a bunch of stuckups, which i hate. but when i go to downtown chicago it's more, like your just you and no one really cares what you have on or what you drive because most people walk downtown and take public transportation. but in the suburbs you'll see everyone driving the chrysler 300's,dodge chargers, and hummers, just the most expensive cars there is. i really like the downtown area better than the suburbian part.

You said you spent the "day" in NYC......In the city, one normally plots out a section to live, shop, dine, etc. and within that community it becomes a small town with the same conditions that you find in rural areas. The big picture may look liberating but people are people. There are more things to do in the city and maybe not as boring as rural areas but the fast pace, noise, did I say noise? That really messes with my senses.I've lived in both city and rural.....you are right about rural gossip, attitude, etc., I'm not a social butterfly so I really don't care. What I do like about rural is the peacefulness, quiet, did I say quiet? The cost of living is cheaper and the most important factor is I don't feel I am living in high risk in rural as much as I did in the city, i.e. traffic accidents, crime; they have so much in the cities that the death of a child or rape rarely makes the newspaper. In rural areas, "everything" makes the newspaper, i.e. lost dog, dog running loose, dog pooped on grass, and we all know who we are...... It's personal preference and thank goodness we have diversity, we can explore and be free to do so.......When I moved to rural from the cities, I had no idea how worn out I was, really tired and in need rest. I think it took me a year or so to regain my "normal balance". The cities are so fast paced and we do it because we have to but, I was a busy business woman, wife and mother and WOW, it takes a toll on us. Who knows if the fast pace or the slow pace makes a difference in a persons life or not or do we adapt to our enviornment regardless? I'm orignally from rural and after 30 years came back home and I love the green green grass of HOME.......Nice Talking With You
