How do you learn how to hip hop dance?

Dancing From Ballet to Hip Hop, competitive to Irish Step Dancing. Everyone loves to dance, even when noone is looking ;)

How do you learn how to hip hop dance?

I am going to take a hip hop class next semester in college so I can learn how to dance... does anybody have any tips on how to practice before I take this class?

Is there any steps to learn or is it like freestyling? Any tips would be great... Is it similar to breakdancing?
