How do I get a guy to ask me to the eighth grade dance?

I have a crush on a guy named Zack. I've known Zack since sixth grade, but we've become really close this year in eighth grade. We talk to each other and joke around a lot, but we don't have a relationship outside of school. He doesn't have a girlfriend, and I know he doesn't have a love interest right now. I was thinking about talking with his best friend Carl. The eighth grade dance is in May, but I'm scared this chick named Desiree is going to get to him first. I already heard her asking him if he had a date today after school.

So...what do I do?
