Why is the logo of the Republican party an elephant? Why is the logo of the

Democratic party a donkey? Why is an elephant the logo of the Republican party? Does an elephant actually have anything to do with a republic, or with the views of the Republicans?

They both come from old political cartoons, and both were intended to be negative.

The Elephant was to show a large slow moving lumbering party.

The Donkey was a Jackass.

But the parties embraced them!

The End

It has been credited to Thomas Nast, an old cartoonist, for drawing the donkey to represent the Democrats and Elephant for the Republicans. Has nothing to do with viewpoints or stances, although Andrew Jackson was called a "jackass" for his views and started actually using that as he campaigned.
