What is the main reason that the Democratic primary has lasted so long?...

...Why can't the party unite? I have just wondered why the Democratic can't unite behind a candidate, the republican party has a candidate, even though there is some dissatisfaction in the party over the choice.

because Obama is a lawyer married to a lawyer, and Hillary is a lawyer married to a lawyer.
both are professional liars, married to professional liars.
I don't think that they are the only two democrats that is tearing the democrat party apart, there is Nancy Pelosi,Ted Kennedy,Dick Durbin,Charles Wrangle, and a lot more.
the democrat party today is not the democrat party of Roosevelt, and Kennedy.
it is the democrat party of entitlement programs, and giving in to the enemy namely islamic extremists.

Because it isn't in the nature of Democrats to fold their hands, and just follow the person at the top, just because some talk radio personality said so.

Clinton's whole purpose is to put a lock on the national elections, so no matter f the Republicans win or the Democrats do, the same politics will reign supreme.
This is obviously the kind of thing Republicans are always complaining about, but happy to help it out, just so their party could win.

Republicans are used to the concept of winning and losing and then moving on with your life. Their primaries are mostly winner-take-all. The loser congratulates the winner and soon gets the message and quits the race. If he continues on making a fool of himself, he quickly becomes irrelevant.

The Democrats don't like losers to feel bad so they "apportion" the votes so even the "loser" gets a few crumbs. That way they can stay in the game long after they should have quit..
The Democrats are the same party that brought you affirmative action and minority set-asides for people who can't compete.
This is like giving trophies to every kid on the soccer team just for showing up - even if the kid is late, out of uniform and helps the opponent score.

The rules for delegates to the Democratic convention are in a contract between the State parties and the DNC. The final delegation has to go to the DNC for approval so that it has the "right" mix of people by race, gender, sexual preference, etc. so that it "looks like America." What BS.
In the Republican party, if you get elected as a delegate, you get to go. You don't, you lose. Period. All merit.

George HW Bush lost the election in 1992. Unexpectedly. He had to move out of White House. Sure it hurt.
He went fishing and has lived a pleasant life without bitterness.
Jimmy Carter is a bitter man and can't keep his mouth shut regardless of who is in the White House.
The Democrats are still whining about losing the Congress in 1994.
They will never get over losing to Bush in 2000.
What a waste of time and energy.

Learn to win and lose, Democrats. It will make your life easier.
