If you're referring to the freeing of the slaves, look at it in context. Republicans were the liberal ones then. They were the ones advocating the reforms to government. Now Republicans are the conservative ones. Racists also tend to be conservative. Just saying.

The party originated as an abolitionist, northern party. It has changed dramatically over 150 years. The HIGHLY ironic thing is that the democrats are responsible for a large amount of poverty among African Americans. By introducing welfare, huge numbers of lower-class but on-the-rise African Americans found it easier to get paid for nothing by the government than to a job, rise up the ladder, and become middle-class. As a result, large percentages of them were kicked back down into the ghetto and remained firmly lower-class. Even today this is still going on. Had moderate/conservative economics been sustained, the huge urban minority lower-classes you see in cities like LA probably wouldn't exist.

If the Republican Party was still the party it was under Lincoln, they'd get the black vote. If it was even the party it was in the 1950s, they'd get the black vote... But, in the 60s, when the Democratic Party gave up the "Racist" vote, Senators like Orin Hatch (Democrat at the time) changed parties to the Republican Party... So, there's a major shift of the Racist vote, through the 60s especially. While the democratic party was NOT originally the party fighting racism, when it switched alignments in the 60s, the Republican party was just too tempted with all those racist voters. The Republican Party should put forth a Black Presidential Candidate to show the country it's no longer the party of Orin Hatch. (I believe it's grown out of it, especially the Ron Paul-ists)
