Is the democratic party going to be able to unite for the general election?

The republicans were divided over John Mccain. Now that he has it wrapped up they are starting to rally behind him. With Barack supporters and Hillary supporters at war and we wont have a nominee until the convention will we be able to unite. There are already rumors that say if Hillary wins Barack is going to run as an independent which will gurantee defeat for the democratic party. Im worried.
