Could I respectfully suggest that you use the web search window at the top of the screen? You'll get a much more complete answer.

Democrats believe that government knows best how people should live their lives. Government should be the entity that makes everyone equal both financially and socially.

Republicans believe the individuals know best for themselves. Government should be there to handle anything that individuals cannot such as maintaining individual freedoms, interstates, foreign relations and the like.

Now that is what they have been over the past 30 years or so, but I think that has changed just slightly. Democrats today are more attuned to pushing America to a lower standard to be more in line with the rest of the world and courting special interest groups. Republicans have moved more to the middle by promoting more government for social programs that really do very little for the individual. They too are courting special interest groups way too much as well.

The biggest most distiguishable comparison is between liberals and conservatives.

They're both out to screw us, the difference is in how they do it. Democrats will bleed us dry with entitlement programs, while Republicans will bleed us dry with unwarranted wars and foreign aid.
