Is this prolonged democratic race for the candidacy bad for the party?

How can the democratic party be divided for so long... and be divided so strongly, and then come together this summer to support one candidate?

Isn't it a little bit hypocritical? I only think so because there is so much "passion" one way or the other... and then come summer, you know the other 1/2 will turn around and support whoever is the candidate...
