| Autistic son and dental care - system failing him? My son is nearly 7 and autistic. We live in the UK. We are having a terrible time getting effective dental care for him. He has a low sugar intake and we clean his teeth twice a day (with difficulty). However, he has still developed decay in his teeth. I have tried my best to prevent this.
He cannot attend a regular dentist because he does not cooperate with treatment, and needs a longer appointment than the allocated time. So, he goes to a 'community dentist' which is especially for people with special needs who need longer appointments.
He never cooperates when he goes, and every time we have a failed check up where he goes beserk and starts screaming, we have to abandon it and try again with another appointment. In the meantime any problems get worse. 2 years ago he had 2 teeth removed because of this.
He now has another cavity and I don't want him to lose another tooth. He needs sedation but they wont do it at the community dentist, so he has been referred to...
...hospital (miles away). The referral was made on 15th March. I finally got a letter from the hospital today (18th April) to make an appointment at the hospital. The nearest one is on 13th May, and that is only for a consultation, not treatment!
So the actual treatment will not be for another month or more at least.
This is crazy. What can I do? |
