How long will it take to heal after dental work?

I haven't been to a dentist in over 2 years and I have been having really bad pain in my teeth. I know I need to go in but have been putting it off because I am a full time student, a full time parent and I have a job, so it's hard to take time off to get major work done (which I know I need) and now I just had my back tooth break while eating ( which is my own damn fault). I'm going to make a dentist appointment in monday, but my question is how long do you think it will take to heal after having a root canal or completely excising a tooth? Can I still work and go to school during the healing process or should I plan to block a lot of time out??? I can't call a dentist since it's like 2am, so I'm hoping someone on here may have some advice.

Hmm.... when I got my wisdom tooth pulled, and when I got a tooth I broke pulled, it took a little less than a week with painkillers to get me "okay" again. It depends on the person and the damage, it might not even be that long. Make sure you listen to what the dentist tells you to do, he/she will most likely talk about gauze and such if you get something pulled. If you don't listen it will take much longer to heal.
