In Desperate Need of a Dental Nurse?

I have an abscess in the root of half a tooth! I was given amoxicillin which has done nothing. The pain has progressed over the weekend. I want the tooth removed but the dentist said we should wait for the abscess to go away then return to discuss treatment. Can I not have to tooth removed just now. I am in total agony! Please help...
Thank you everyone. All very helpfull. I am 3 days in to Amoxicillin 250mg course and also taking Solpadol but the pain is worse. I just wondered why the tooth could not be treated just now and you have answered my Q. Thanks for your time. I shall phone the surgery in the morning. Think I need a stronger prescription?!
