What is the life expectancy of a 30 year old male, heavy smoker, who does...

...not control his diabetes? Blood sugar between 200-450. Subject is very thin even though he eats like a horse.
The "subject" is my husband. He does not seem to worry that various parts of his body swell up (including his feet). He can not put on weight(He eats everything!) He also has a 4 year old daughter that will miss him very much if he does not change his habits.

It's a wonder you've lasted this long. are you on dialysis yet? How long have you been a diabetic? are you on insulin? you should be. You cannot gain weight even though you eat like a horse because the body is sending it right out the other 2 holes. Are you vomiting or feel nasuas? You need to go to the doctor and take your meds. Diabetes is going to do you in before the smoking. I've been a diabetic for 27 yrs. and have smoked for the last 17 yrs. (2+ packs a day).Knock on wood i'm still here but my sugars aren't as bad as yours. PLEASE see your doctor or take better care of yourself and take your meds.
After you posted the other facts he needs to really see his doctor. Holding fluid is NOT good. I wasn't trying to be sarcastic with my top comments. Smoking is no better than High bloodsugars. But the swelling if he's not careful the fluid could go to his heart and he could seriously die. Please tell him to see his doctor this is real serious and nothing to play around with. Has he tried any of the new meds available to stop smoking? I used Wellbutrin and it helped but then I couldn't afford the meds. I hope you can talk him into taking care ofhimself for you and your child.

I think he needs to realize that he needs to take care of himself, not only for him, or you, but his daughter! How dare he not realize how much she will be needing him in the future? You must get on him, and schedule him a dr. appt. If he loves his family he will do it, you need to be persistent. My husband was pretty stubborn, and now he takes care of himself, of course I remind him of his medications, but he does take them. GOod luck to you and your daughter

Of course he is very thin!! his bod is eating itself. his foods are not doing him any good at all.

His life expectancy is not to reach 50 most likely.

He will be in a world of hurt in the near soon. He can lose very precious parts of himself to amputation and eyesight going away. He can be put on dialysis soon if he doesn't wake up!

But there is nothing you can do about this problem until he wants to do it. He will when it is too late.

i'm 22 and have been diabetic since i was 8. i've always been told that diabetics (even with good control) lose about 12 years of their life expectancy due to the disease....which with the technology today that is sure to change with this generation. but if he isnt taking advantage of the new technology and refuses to get in control and quit smoking (smoking increases heart disease, stroke and bad circulation in diabetics) then he will not live to be an old man. but as someone else already said...if he isn't willing to change then there is no helping him. and the reason he cant put on weight is because with blood sugar levels that high....his body is eating his fat supply. according to how long he has had diabetes...i would say he is on his way to a heart attack or stroke in the near future. i hope not! good luck.
