Insulin was the first, and remains the primary means of treatment for Type 1 diabetes and is administered by subcutaneous injection.

During the past several years a large number of different classes of drug therapies for patients with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes have been developed.

Metformin reduces the excessive hepatic glucose production that characterizes Type 2 diabetes. With reduced hyperglycaemia, glucose uptake by peripheral tissues is enhanced while insulin levels remain stable or decline.

Troglitazone is a member of a new class of drugs that are 'insulin sensitizers'. It was selected on the basis of its effect to lower glycaemia without increasing insulin levels, its ability to improve lipid levels and absence of significant side effects or adverse events in short-term human studies.

Once diagnosed with diabetes, you will always have diabetes. However, there are ways to control your diabetes and to make your life so much more nicer.

First of all your doctor will give you some options to follow that will improve your quality of life. They are:

-oral medications to take by mouth or insulin shots (he or she will show you how to do this on yourself. I used to use shots and gave them to myself all the time)

-some form of diet to follow, along with the do's and don'ts of eating for a diabetic

-an exercise program and a weight management program to follow.

-a prescription to get your own blood sugar monitor to test your sugar levels through out the day and record them in a journal.

Your doctor may even set up a appt. for you to see a dietician as well. All the things above is very important to maintaining a good sugar level for your body and for your life.

There is no cure for diabetes, but there are ways to manage it. Good luck to you. I've had diabetes since 1996. Hope this was helpful for you. Have a nice weekend.

You can treat diabetes itself with insulin and oral meds and diet. The results of diabetes, which are too many to name, can be treated also. It depends on what it is, but treatment can range from pain medication, to surgery and all in between.
